John
Coffey was born in 1946 in Massachusetts. Coffey arrived in San Diego
County, California, in 1949. Coffey attended St. Augustine High
School in San Diego and graduated in 1963. Coffey later attended San
Diego State University and the University of Colorado, Boulder
campus, from 1965 to 1969. Coffey served on Active Duty in the US
Army from 1969 to 1977. His assignments included infantry, military
intelligence and medical corps. Coffey graduated from St. Martin's
College in Lacey, Washington in 1975 and Western State University
College of Law in 1986.
Coffey's
employment included five years with the Social Security
Administration and six years with the Department of the Navy as a
paralegal. Since 1995, Coffey has been an employee of Barstow Unified
School District in various teaching and administrative positions.
Coffey is fluent in German and in Spanish. Coffey has held
supervisory positions in the Mojave Desert with the United States
Census Bureau from 1999 to 2000 and 2009 to 2010. Coffey's recent
local government positions include Board Administrator of Newberry
Springs Community Services District from 2004 to 2005.
Coffey
is a life long Democrat. From a member of the Young Democrats in high
school, Coffey worked on John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign and
helped elect Lionel VanDeerlin to his first term in Congress from
Chula Vista.
Coffey
is a founding member of HelpHinkley.org. Coffey has represented
Defenders of Wildlife and various environmental organizations
including appearing at dozens of administrative hearings involving
sludge, energy projects, and Chromium 6 issues. Coffey is a member of
a number of organizations including Disabled American Veterans, Law
School Alumni Association, Defenders of Wildlife, Fathers and
Families, Barstow Boron Lodge #682 F & AM in Barstow, and
supports a Masonic youth organization.
